UPON THE 21ST ANNIVERSARY OF
SOUTH DURBAN COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL ALLIANCE (SDCEA)
IDEX’s staff, grantees, board members, supporters, and allies are pleased to share our admiration and gratitude for the powerful impact of SDCEA’s work over the past 21 years.
SDCEA affirms our belief in community organizing to build power for radical change. By grounding advocacy in people’s every day lived experience, global paradigms are shifted.
From encouraging young people to transform their relationships with nature, their neighbors, and themselves – to squashing port expansions and shutting down toxic waste dumps in South Durban – to fighting for fairer policies on global stages, SDCEA sets the bar for social transformation based on principles of community self-determination.
SDCEA’s staff, community leaders, and allies continue to demonstrate how one-on-one relationships are the building blocks for changing the world. This, when coupled with deep analysis of the global economy and history, sends an echo out among the world: “I, YOU, WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.”
From IDEX’s global perspective, SDCEA’s work is inspiring many people around the world to develop humble, but mighty approaches to confronting entrenched power. The ripples, the currents, that SDCEA sets forth will continue to build a more just, and sustainable world for 21 years to come…and beyond!
